West fails to achieve goals in Syria: Iran MP

An Iranian lawmaker has hailed the Syrian government’s strong resistance against the Western-Arab plots, saying the West has failed to achieve its goals in Syria since the outset of the crisis some 24 months ago.

“The logistic and financial support provided by the West to the opposition groups over the recent 24 months has not benefitted them at all but has only resulted in negative psychological effects in their own communities,” a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani, said on Wednesday.

He added that the Syrian government and army succeeded in showing fierce resistance against the Western-Arab ploys, emphasizing that the terrorists would be expelled from the country in the near future.

The Iranian legislator noted that certain extra-regional countries that are supporting the terrorists have also understood that their warmongering policies would only lead to financial costs and said that they currently seek to reduce their expenses in Syria by raising the issue of negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition.

Bakhshayesh called on the Syrian nation to cooperate with the government and take steps to neutralize foreign plots.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
