Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said eradication of terrorist groups in the Middle East stands atop their countries’ security agenda.

In a meeting in Damascus on Wednesday, Assad and Boroujerdi discussed regional developments, particularly the emergence of terrorist groups in Syria and the supports they have received since their establishment from certain western countries and their regional allies.

The Syrian president stressed that fanning the flames of violence against Syrians by terrorists and their supporters has failed and will always fail to weaken the Syrians’ steadfastness to root out terrorism.

Boroujerdi, for his part, expressed Iran’s readiness to support Syria till the crisis in the country is over, adding that no force in the world can disturb relations between Tehran and Damascus.

On Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian renewed Iran’s support for the Syrian government and nation in their fight against foreign-backed terrorists.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s strategic decision is based on continuing full support for Syria in its fight against terrorism until the ongoing crisis in Syria ends,” Amir Abdollahian said in a meeting with a group of Syrian political and social activists in Tehran.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister felicitated the Syrian government and nation over the recent victories in Qalamoun and the recent advances in the Northern parts of the country, and said, “The same way that the Syrian nation has defused all enemies’ plots in both areas of politics and war so far, they will not allow the enemies achieve their goals through psychological war in future and they will emerge victorious from this imposed crisis.”

In late April, UN Special Envoy to Syria Stephan De Mistura underlined that ignoring Iran’s role in the settlement of the Syrian crisis has been a grave mistake by the western countries.

“Ignoring Iran’s role as an important regional country in the settlement of the Syrian crisis was a complete mistake and constructive efforts should be made to compensate for it,” De Mistura said in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New York on April 27.

During the meeting on the sidelines of the 2015 NPT Review Conference, De Mistura briefed Zarif on the latest developments in Syria and the efforts made to find a political solution to the crisis in the Arab country.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, voiced his concern over certain states’ negative role in the intensification of Syrian crisis, and underlined Iran’s readiness to support the efforts and initiatives of De Mistura who has peaceful solutions in mind to help return stability and calm to Syria.

Following the meeting, Stephan De Mistura told reporters that he has officially invited Iran to participate in the Geneva-3 conference on Syria, adding that he had positive and constructive talks with Zarif.
