Yemenis celebrate fall of Tripoli

Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters have taken to the streets across Yemen to celebrate the recent achievement of revolutionaries in Libya in capturing the capital city of Tripoli.

Demonstrators staged massive rallies in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a to express their pleasure for the success of the Libyan revolution and vowed to continue with their protests until the overthrow of President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s regime, a Press TV correspondent reported from Sana’a on Tuesday.

Protesters also took to the streets of southern city of Taizz at night to celebrate the events in Libya.

Libyan revolutionary fighters swept into the heart of Tripoli early on Monday and reportedly seized control of most of the city without facing significant resistance from regime forces.

Yemeni protesters also chanted anti government slogans and expressed their support to the country’s newly established National Council.

The formation of the Council was announced late Wednesday, a day after Saleh claimed that he would soon return to Yemen.

Some 800 representatives of different opposition groups had elected members of the Council.

Saleh is currently receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia for injuries he sustained during an attack on his palace in early June.

Popular protests against Saleh broke out earlier this year, encouraged by uprisings that toppled the dictators of Tunisia and Egypt in January and February.

In another massive anti-government move, Yemeni protesters have planned to perform Eid al-Fitr prayers, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan next week.

Hundreds of protesters have been killed and many more injured in the regime’s crackdown on Yemen’s popular uprising.
