Yemenis shelled in Sana’a, Taizz

Yemeni government forces have shelled Sana’a and a number of villages in the southwestern province of Taizz, reportedly causing some casualties.

On Monday, government forces targeted areas inside Sana’a, including the protest hub Liberation Square, and Taizz Province.

Earlier in the day, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Sana’a and the city of Taizz, the capital of Taizz Province. Demonstrations were also reported in Ibb, another southwestern city, and the city of Sa’ada in the northwest.

The revolutionaries urged Ali Abdullah Saleh to return to Yemen to stand trial for killing hundreds of people during the regime’s crackdown on the demonstrations.

In a popular revolution, thousands of people have turned out for regular demonstrations in Yemen’s major cities since January, calling for an end to corruption and unemployment and demanding the ouster of Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saleh is currently in Saudi Arabia, where he is receiving treatment for injuries he received in a June 3 RPG attack on the presidential palace.

The revolutionaries have also condemned Saudi Arabia and the United States, saying they are attempting to smother Yemen’s revolution.

During the Monday demonstrations, the people vowed to do anything necessary to ensure that the popular movement succeeds.
