Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian for allegedly attempting to attack an Israeli officer with a knife in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).

The killing reportedly took place at Lions Gate in East al-Quds’ Old City on Monday.

The Israeli forces who killed the Palestinian claimed he tried to stab an officer, whose protective vest, they said, prevented him from being injured.

The death on Monday brings to 25 the number of the Palestinians killed in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip since last Saturday.

Israeli army troops also abducted 33 Palestinians in overnight raids throughout the West Bank.

The incident comes amid a wave of clashes between Israelis and Palestinians in recent weeks.

There has been a rise in shootings by Israeli forces against Palestinians accused of planning to carry out stabbing attacks against Israelis.

Last month, Israeli forces shot and killed an 18-year-old woman they accused of attempting to stab an officer in the occupied West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron). Amnesty International (AI) said the killing amounted to an “extrajudicial execution,” as images from the moments leading to her death show her without a knife.

Earlier this month, Israeli forces killed 19-year-old Palestinian Fadi Samir Mustafa Alloun near the al-Aqsa Mosque compound after accusing him of trying to stab an Israeli settler. He was shot several times despite a video showing him approaching Israeli police as he was being chased by a number of settlers.

On October 9, an Israeli man stabbed four Palestinians in Dimona in the Negev desert.

This comes a day after the Palestinian Health Ministry said more than 1,300 Palestinians had been shot with live rounds by Israeli forces since the beginning of October.

Tensions have been on the rise between Israelis and Palestinians since Tel Aviv’s imposition on August 26 of sweeping restrictions on entries into the compound of the al-Aqsa Mosque and Israeli settlers’ repeated stormings of the mosque.
