London protesters to mark 12th Afghan war anniv.

Britain’s leading anti-war group will stage a public rally in London later today to mark the 12th anniversary of the US-led invasion of Afghanistan on October 7, 2001.

The protest rally organized by the Stop the War Coalition will call for an end to the widely-unpopular war on terror, spear-headed by the US with the backing of several of its western allies including Britain.

The term war on terror was coined by Washington in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US and was used as the main pretext for the occupation of Afghanistan, and later, of Iraq.

The September 11 also marks the foundation of the British anti-war group, which has been campaigning for “ending the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, bringing the troops home and forcing the British government to change its disastrous foreign policies”.

Stop the War’s public rally will call for a full withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan and halt in any likely western intervention in Syria.

A British parliamentary vote back in August thwarted Prime Minister David Cameron’s plans for military intervention, a development believed to have been influential in preventing the US from attacking the Middle Eastern country.

However, there are concerns that Britain is still providing funds and arms to the foreign-backed militants in Syria while also running camps in some of the country’s neighbors, where the militants are being trained.
