Hungary has embraced the recent agreement between Iran and six world powers over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.

The Hungarian deputy state secretary for global affairs and political director, Szabolcs Takács, welcomed the deal in a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American Affairs Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi in Tehran on Wednesday.

Takács, who is on a visit to Iran at the head of a delegation, also voiced his country’s readiness to forge closer cooperation with the Islamic Republic in all sectors.

He said that the numerous historical commonalities as well as the cultural bonds between Iran and Hungary could pave the way for the further promotion of bilateral ties, especially on economic and trade fronts.

Takht-e-Ravanchi, for his part, said that the administration of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani seeks closer ties with other countries, stressing that Hungary is a traditional friend of Iran in Eastern Europe.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran sees no limits to the expansion of relations with Hungary and welcomes the promotion of cooperation in all the domains of science, culture, economy, trade, commerce, sports and tourism,” he said.

On November 24, Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – Russia, China, France, Britain and the US – plus Germany sealed an interim deal in the Swiss city of Geneva to lay the groundwork for the full resolution of the dispute between the West and Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.

In exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities, the six countries undertook to lift some of the existing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
