The number of Americans killed by US police so far in 2015 has reached 1,000 after the last officer-involved shooting on Sunday in Oakland, California, where a man, who was allegedly holding a replica gun, was shot dead by cops.

According to the Guardian’s records, Sunday’s incident was the 883rd fatal shooting by a law enforcement officer so far this year. In addition, 47 people died after officers hit them with Taser, 33 died after being struck by a police officer’s vehicle, and 36 were killed while in police custody. Another was killed after receiving a deadly blow to the head during a fight with an officer.

On Sunday and during an illegal gathering of hundreds of cars racing and performing stunts, officers were towing cars involved in the so-called sideshow in the area of 90th and Bancroft avenues about 5:30 p.m.

A 39-year-old man, who was holding a replica gun approached the officers, pointing the gun toward them, according to the Oakland Police Department.

The officers discharged their weapons without exchanging words, fatally shooting the man, police said.

“Officers working sideshow approached by subject who pointed firearm in their direction,” the Oakland police department said on Twitter. “Officers fatally shot subject.”

They later discovered that the gun was not real. According to a spokeswoman, the department would investigate the shooting itself.

According to the Guardian, the Sunday shooting marked the 183rd death recorded in California, by far the greatest total of any state.

However, nine states have seen more deaths per capita, with Oklahoma recording the highest rate.

The US police have come under severe criticism for its violent behavior toward Americans, in particular, African Americans. There have been numerous protests in cities across the US in the past several months over police brutality.
