In an interview with IRIB on Saturday, Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, commented on the reasons why the West has objected to Iran’s use of a new generation of centrifuges. He said: “Perhaps Western countries didn’t expect Iran to come up with a new generation of centrifuges which are capable of enriching uranium, at a rate ten to fifteen times faster than the older generation”.
In further remarks, Ali Akbar Salehi said there seems to be a misunderstanding with regards to Iran’s research and development activities in the peaceful nuclear technology field. He added: “We have always tried to make transparent our activities and clarify any ambiguities which the other side pointed to, and in order to do this, on various occasions we have gone well beyond our legal obligations under the safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency”.
The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization went on to describe the part of the interim Geneva Accord which relates to research and development of Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme as perfectly transparent and unambiguous. Salehi pointedly added: “Iran’s Atomic Energy experts in the recent negotiations in Geneva, managed to present a very clear logical argument and proved the baselessness of the arguments put forward by the other side, and in the end, the 5+1 Group accepted Iran’s right to use a new generation of centrifuges for research purposes”.
