Iran to raise US rights issue at UN

Iran will voice its “serious concerns” over human rights violations in the US at an upcoming UN meeting on US rights status, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says.
“Iran is seriously concerned about the human rights status in Western countries, particularly the US, and Tehran’s view on the issue will be presented at the United Nations’ UPR [Universal Periodic Review],” Ramin Mehmanparast said on Monday.
The United Nations Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review, which is held once every four years, involves a review of the human rights records of all UN member states.
The ninth session of the UPR will be held on November 1-12 during which the human rights status of 16 countries will be discussed.
He said Western countries accuse other states of human rights violations to cover their “improper condition” in rights issues, Mehr News Agency reported.
Mehmanparast stressed that all independent countries taking part in the summit should call on the US to improve its human rights status.
Police violence, prisoner abuse, illegal detentions and disrespect towards other religions are some of the instances of human rights violations witnessed in the US, he said.
