Ahmedinejad travels to New York for UN General Assembly meeting

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has travelled to New York to attend the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in late September.

The Iranian chief executive left Tehran on top of a high-ranking diplomatic mission on Saturday.

“Today, we will attend the UN [meeting] to be able to convey the message of the Iranian nation for the overhaul of the global management system,” Ahmadinejad told reporters at Mehrabad International Airport before his departure.

The Iranian president noted that, on the sidelines of the session, he will also hold talks with senior officials from the participating countries, anti-war groups and peace activists, religious leaders, Iranian nationals in the US as well as the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Ahmadinejad also said he will take part in interviews with different international media.

The Iranian chief executive pointed to Iran’s rotational presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) for the next three years and noted that as the representative of the Movement, Tehran will discuss NAM’s proposals with regard to restructuring the UN and resolving the regional crises, such as the ongoing violence in Syria.

It will be Ahmadinejad’s eighth trip to New York for a UN General Assembly session since first becoming president back in 2005.
