Iran commander wants Basij reinforced

A commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says reinforcing the country’s Basij forces will further strengthen Iran’s military might.

“If we focus on the Basij and strengthen and enhance the forces, we will no longer have qualms about any threats,” Fars News Agency quoted IRGC’s Deputy Coordinator, Brigadier General Jamaluddin Aberoumand, as saying Saturday.

The top general also stressed the need for intercepting and recognizing Western ‘soft war’ tactics, since “combating soft war requires special approaches … and must not be neglected.”

The remarks come as the US removed the name of Iran, the sole country without nuclear weapons, from its annual list of similar countries which Washington pledges not to attack with atomic bombs.

Meanwhile, senior US officials have reiterated that “all options” are on the table — a veiled warning that the White House does not deem a nuclear attack against Iran as unfeasible.

This is while the US and its allies are vying to gather support for a UN Security Council resolution to slap new tough sanctions against Tehran.

Iran, a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, defends its right to a peaceful civilian nuclear program, rejecting any clandestine intentions of developing weapons.

Last week, the IRGC conducted sophisticated maneuvers in the Persian Gulf, with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei stressing that Iran is not seeking nuclear weapons.
