The Syrian army has regained full control of a strategic base near Aleppo International Airport, following heavy fighting with foreign-backed militants.

The state television said on Sunday that following days of clashes with foreign-backed militants, “Our brave armed forces have complete control over Base 80.”

Moreover, Syrian army continues to gain more ground in its fight against the militants across the country.

Also on Sunday, Syrian media said that the army confronted militants who had tried to attack a military post in Idlib, killing or wounding all of them.

Syrian forces also inflicted heavy losses on the militants in other nearby villages, with the army saying that it has destroyed many of the militants’ hideouts as well as their weapons and ammunition.

Reports say similar mop-up operations are underway in Homs with Syrian forces announcing that a large number of militants have been killed in raging battles in several towns and villages.

The advances come a day after army forces regained control of al-Ghanto-Talbiseh road that the militants had been using to attack towns and villages in Homs countryside.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.

The UN recently warned against the humanitarian situation in Syria, saying that over nine million people are in need of urgent aid due to the crisis in the country.
