The Pakistani military has accused Indian troops of storming a military post on the two countries’ de facto border in Kashmir and killing a Pakistani soldier.

The military said in a statement that a second Pakistani soldier was also critically wounded in the incident early Sunday.

Indian troops had crossed the line and “physically raided a check post named Sawan Patra”, the statement said.

The statement added that the Indian incursion across the Line of Control marking the frontier in the Haji Pir sector, 80 kilometers (49 miles) north of Islamabad had led to an ongoing exchange of fire.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.

Last week, people in India-administered Kashmir shut down businesses and offices, after the pro-independence camp in the region called for a walkout to condemn Indian troops’ shootings at peaceful protesters on December 28, in Pulwama town.

Amnesty International called for an independent probe into the violation of human rights in the Indian-administered Kashmir on December 13.

The human rights organization’s move comes in reaction to a recently released report by activists on gross human rights abuses in the disputed region over the past two decades.
