US President Barack Obama has voiced strong support for Japan and Ukraine.

Obama told a press conference in Tokyo that Washington is obliged to protect Japan in face of any confrontation over the disputed islands in the East China Sea.

“Article five [of the US-Japan security treaty] covers all territories under Japan’s administration including [the] Senkaku islands,” Obama said.

The tiny islands are called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

“We do not believe that they should be subject to change unilaterally, and what is a consistent part of the alliance is that the treaty covers all territories administered by Japan,” he said. “This is not a new position. This is a consistent one.”

But he said: “We stand together in calling for disputes in the region, including maritime issues, to be resolved peacefully through dialogue.”

Obama, in Tokyo at the start of a four-nation tour of Asia, said he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed in a meeting to continue deepening security cooperation, and to working through the thorny problem of the huge US military presence in Okinawa, which is disliked by many locals.

On the US-Russian dispute over recent developments in Ukraine, the president said Russia is not abiding by agreements aimed at defusing the crisis in Ukraine.

“Instead we continue to see malicious, armed men taking over buildings, harassing folks who are disagreeing with them, destabilizing the region and we haven’t seen Russia step out and discouraging it,” he said.

On April 17, Ukraine’s interim government together with the US, Russia and the European Union reached an agreement in Geneva, calling on all sides to resolve the crisis in eastern Ukraine, where anti-Kiev protests are calling for integration with Russia.

Washington and Moscow blame each other for the ongoing political crisis in Ukraine, with the White House accusing the Kremlin of supporting protesters and the Russians accusing the Americans of “running the show” in that country.

“We have already applied sanctions that have had an impact on the Russian economy. We have continued to hold out the prospect, the possibility to resolve the issue diplomatically,” Obama said.

The US and the EU have already imposed sanctions such as visa bans and asset freezes on a number of individuals in Russia and Crimea, a peninsula which broke away from Ukraine and joined Russia after a referendum on March 16.
