FBI reports staff inappropriate behavior

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued confidential internal disciplinary quarterly reports, which detail the inappropriate behavior of its staff in a bid to discourage misconduct.

The reports list a range of misbehavior by FBI employees including sexting, tax fraud, and secret surveillance of colleagues by FBI staffers over the past year.

The FBI is hopeful that the reports help ending what its assistant director Candice Will has described as a “rash of sexting cases,” that involve employees who use the devices that the government has given them to send inappropriate texts and photos.

“We’re hoping (that) getting the message out in the quarterlies is going to teach people, as well as their supervisors … you can’t do this stuff,” Will said.

She further stated that “When you are given an FBI BlackBerry, it’s for official use. It’s not to text the woman in another office … That is not why we provide you an FBI BlackBerry.”

According to the agency, the FBI took disciplinary action against more than 1,000 employees from 2010 to 2012 for different kinds of violations and dismissed 85 of the employees.

While the FBI internal reports do not specify names, job titles or locations of the employees, they give exact and explicit details of the misconduct.

“As long I’ve been doing this … there are days when I think ‘OK, I’ve seen it all,’ but I really haven’t,” Will said. “I still get files and I think, ‘Wow, I never would have thought of that.'”
