Hamas asserts that Israel should be compelled to adhere to the ceasefire agreement

The Palestinian group Hamas has indicated that it remains open to ceasefire discussions, even as the Israeli military continues its airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.

Hamas has asserted that a new agreement is unnecessary and has called for the Israeli government to be compelled to uphold the terms of the current accord.

Hamas remains open to the possibility of negotiations but maintains its stance against the necessity for new agreements, according to Hamas official Taher al-Nunu speaking to AFP from Cairo.

He stated that additional agreements are unnecessary, emphasizing that the existing accord, signed by all involved parties, is sufficient.

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, a ceasefire agreement facilitated by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt came into force in January. This accord halts a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of nearly 50,000 individuals, with thousands still missing, marking a critical pause in the violence.

According to the agreement, the second phase of the ceasefire was scheduled to commence in early March.

According to the terms of the agreement, Israeli forces are required to withdraw from Gaza, with a more permanent ceasefire set to be implemented in a subsequent phase.

The Israeli government has declined to proceed to the next stage of negotiations, according to reports.

Nunu stated that although there are no preconditions, there is a demand for the occupation to immediately cease its aggressive actions and acts of extermination, and to commence the next phase of negotiations.

He urged the international community to “act swiftly” to halt the ongoing conflict and accused Israel of “breaching the ceasefire agreement it previously endorsed.”

On Tuesday, Israel conducted one of its most significant and lethal airstrike operations in Gaza since the escalation of hostilities began in 2023.

The health ministry in Gaza, governed by Hamas, reported that Israeli airstrikes on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of over 400 individuals. This marks one of the most lethal days witnessed in Gaza throughout the ongoing conflict.
