Hamas has declared plans to release Israeli-American captive Idan Alexander amid escalating Israeli military actions that have resulted in over 2,700 Palestinian casualties since the conflict resumed on March 18th.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintains a firm position, asserting that Hamas’s move will not lead to a halt in hostilities or the release of Palestinian prisoners.

In a statement, Netanyahu underscored that efforts to negotiate the release of all hostages in Gaza will continue “under fire,” even as the Israeli military braces for a possible intensification of the conflict.

He further claimed that Israel’s only duty is to create a secure route for Alexander’s release, crediting the progress to the “military pressure” applied on Gaza.

Hamas has expressed its willingness to engage in intensive negotiations, signaling a potential shift in the dynamics of ongoing discussions. This move indicates a readiness to engage in deeper dialogue and possibly explore avenues for resolution.

In a development yesterday evening, Hamas declared its intention to release Alexander at an as-yet-undetermined date. This announcement followed the group’s disclosure of direct negotiations with the United States in Doha, focusing on establishing a ceasefire and facilitating aid access into Gaza.

Khalil al-Hayya, a key figure in Gaza, conveyed through a statement that Hamas is prepared to “initiate intensive negotiations without delay and engage earnestly towards reaching a conclusive agreement to cease hostilities. The plan includes a mutually agreed prisoner exchange, governance of the Gaza Strip by an independent and professional entity to ensure prolonged peace and stability, alongside efforts for reconstruction and the lifting of the blockade.”

The family of Alexander has issued a statement revealing they have been notified that his release is expected “in the coming days.”

Trump described the action as “a gesture of goodwill.”

Trump lauded the announcement, voicing optimism for the freeing of all detainees and a resolution to the conflict.

On Truth Social, Trump referred to the prisoner’s release as a “gesture of goodwill.”

Egypt and Qatar have characterized Hamas’ declaration as “a gesture of goodwill,” viewing it as a promising development towards resuming negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This move is also seen as a step towards the release of prisoners and detainees, and ensuring the secure and unrestricted delivery of aid to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Since March 18, as hostilities in the Gaza Strip have reignited, 2,720 Palestinians have lost their lives and 7,513 others have sustained injuries, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.
