Britain has named the current deputy director of its domestic spy agency MI5 as the new intelligence organization’s chief with his mandate beginning next month.

Sir Jonathan Evans, who is the incumbent MI5 chief, will step down on April 22 when his deputy Andrew Parker will take over at the security service.

Parker was promoted to the deputy director position in April 2007 after leading MI5’s response team to the July 7 attacks on London in 2005.

Parker reportedly specializes in work on the Middle East, Northern Ireland terrorism, counter espionage and serious and organized crime.
