US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan

A militant attack has claimed the life of a US-led soldier in southern Afghanistan, bringing the death toll of foreign soldiers in the war-torn country to 541 so far this year.

NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) reported the death on Wednesday without referring to the nationality of the soldier.

ISAF said in a brief statement that the soldier lost his life in a fight with Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, but gave no further details.

The incident comes as the number of attacks against Western troops in Afghanistan has soared significantly in the past months amid a public outcry against the prolonged war in the country.

The foreign soldiers’ death toll in Afghanistan this year has reached the highest annual toll since the start of the US-led invasion of the country nearly nine years ago.

The US and its allies have more than 150,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan. American and NATO forces have failed to bring peace to the violence-wracked country.

The loss of civilian lives at the hand of foreign forces has led to a dramatic increase in anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan.
