Iran, Egypt plans can help OIC resolve Syrian crisis: Iran MP

A senior Iranian lawmaker has expressed hope that proposals by Iran and Egypt would contribute to end the crisis in Syria during the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Cairo.

“Iran’s plan as well as Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s plan enjoy high potentials for the settlement of Syria’s problem and we hope the meeting would be a beginning of the end of the Syrian crisis as one of the main problems in the Muslim world,” Chairman of Iran’s Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Borojerdi on Tuesday.

The OIC summit, in which Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will take part, has been underway in the Egyptian capital city, Cairo, since February 2 and will run until February 7.

On December 16, Iran unveiled the details of a six-point plan to resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria, which calls for an immediate end to all violent and armed acts.

The plan calls for sending humanitarian aid to the Syrians following the end of all conflicts, lifting all economic sanctions imposed against the country, and facilitating the return of displaced Syrians to their homes.

Morsi put forward the initiative of forming a contact group on Syria comprising Iran, Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia during an OIC meeting held on August 14-15 in Mecca.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Boroujerdi also urged the OIC meeting to adopt firm positions against Israel’s settlement expansion plans and condemn the recent Israeli airstrike on a Syrian research center.

The Syrian army said in a statement on January 30 that two people were killed and five others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a research center in Jamraya, located 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Damascus.

The Iranian lawmaker also said that the OIC meeting should address the problems of Muslim countries in Africa, including Mali and Somalia and take measures to resolve the crises there.
