Portuguese cartoon contest honors Iranian artist

Iranian graphic designer and cartoonist Saeed Sadeqi’s creation has garnered first award of Gag Cartoon category at the World Press Cartoon contest in Portugal.

Sadeqi’s work titled Low Economy picked up the prize during an award ceremony at the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center in Sintra, Portugal.

Born in 1974 in Jahrom, Sadeqi got B.A in painting from Tehran Art University and has many notable experiences in Graphic design and Cartoon.

He has participated in a number of international competitions and received several awards such as First prize of International Caricature and Cartoon Contest Ciudad de Bogota, Colombia in 2008 and First prize of the 2nd International Cartoon Contest Mussel and Fish in Bulgaria in 2010.

The World Press Cartoon contest also lauded the Iranian woman artist, Firouzeh Mozaffari, with Honorable Mention for her work Child Kingdom participated in Gag Cartoon category.

Second prize of the category went to Who is… created by French artist Robert Rousso while Peruvian cartoonist Raul Zuleta won third prize for Free Warrior.

The Greek cartoonist Michael Kountouris received the festival’s Grand Prix for his work titled EU Rescue Team in the Editorial Cartoon category.

The winners’ works along with the selected pieces from among the entries have been displayed in an exhibition mounted in the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center. The exhibition will run until June 30, 2013.

Organized by the Sintra Museum of Modern Art and the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center, the contest is held to hail the cartoons published in newspapers or magazines.

The ninth edition of contest’s award ceremony was held on April 12, 2013.
