Syrian President, Iranian Diplomat Discuss Ukraine

President of Syria Bashar al-Assad and an adviser to the Iranian foreign minister talked about a range of issues at a meeting in Damascus, including the latest developments in Ukraine.

Ali Asghar Khaji, senior adviser for political affairs to Iran’s foreign minister, met with the Syrian president in Damascus on Tuesday.

They discussed various issues in the meeting, including the latest developments in Syria, Tehran-Damascus relations, the Vienna talks, the Ukraine crisis, continuation of the Astana process, and the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.

Referring to the developments on the ground in Syria and the resumption of its ties with the other countries, the senior adviser to the Iranian foreign minister underlined that that the policy of isolating Syria, pursued by the West, has failed.

Khaji also reiterated that holding a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Astana format members and also a summit of their presidents in Tehran is being pursued, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

The latest developments in Ukraine were also discussed in the meeting, as well as the role of the United States and NATO in creating the crisis there and its regional and international ramifications.

For his part, Assad referred to the developments in the region and the world and the strategic relations between Iran and Syria.

He then underlined the need to continue consultations between the two countries, especially at turning points of regional developments.

He also stressed the Syrian government’s support for the continuation of the Syrian political process and national dialogue in the form of the Astana format and the Constitutional Committee.
