Iraq war behind US economic crisis

A top Iranian commander says the costly US-led invasion of Iraq which has come at a heavy price for the American society is to blame for the United States’ economic meltdown.

“Second only to World War II, the Iraq war has been the costliest war for America, and the longest war in the history of the United States after the Vietnam war, and some believe the US economic bankruptcy today which has struck despair and hopelessness into the American society emanates from $3 trillion US spending on occupation, aggression and adventurism in Iraq,” said Brigadier General Gholamreza Samini, a top commander with the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.

The Iraq war has left more than a hundred thousand people killed, tens of thousands wounded and thousands more mentally disturbed, he noted.

The US-led invasion of Iraq has also seen large numbers of people made homeless, and the rich oil resources of the country being looted, said the commander.

“This is the legacy that the American liberal democracy and Western-style human rights have left for the Iraqi people so far,” he added.

“Conclusive evidence shows Americans and the mercenary elements backed by the White House and occupiers are behind all events which have stoked insecurity in Iraq,” General Samini underlined.

Today, he said, the United States is the country most hated by the Iraqi people.

The top Iranian commander underlined the resistance by the Iraqi and Afghan nations has resulted in the failure of the occupiers.
