Russia: It’s Not Time for Sanctions on Syria… China: Syria’s Future Should Be Decided by the Syrians

Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vitaly Churkin on Tuesday said that Moscow doesn’t think it is time to impose sanctions on Syria.

Asked on his way to attend a regular Security Council meeting on whether it was time for sanctions on Damascus, Churkin told reporters, “No, we don’t think so.”

He said that Russia believes that the Security Council clearly expressed its stance in its statement released on the 3rd of August, adding “We hope a dialogue will be carried out in Syria and think we should continue working within the framework of this unified stance.”

For its part, China reiterated that the future of Syria should be decided by the Syrian people, saying “all sides in the country have to work for reaching a solution to the situation through dialogue and peaceful consultation.”

“The international community’s movements regarding Syria should help encourage the Syrian government to execute the reform program,” Xinhua News Agency quoted the Spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Ma Zhaoxu as saying.

He added the international community has to encourage all sides for a constructive participation in a tolerant political track with a Syrian initiative to push the situation in the country towards stability as soon as possible.
