Politician: Mursi Strongly Willing to Forge Iran-Egypt Coalition

A former member of Ikhwan al-Muslimun (Muslim Brotherhood) Party stressed the necessity for the resumption of ties between Iran and Egypt, and added that the country’s newly-elected President, Mohammad Mursi, strongly supports Tehran-Cairo rapprochement.

Speaking to FNA on Saturday, Servat al-Kharbawi stressed the necessity for the resumption of the two Muslim states’ relations, and stated, “We believe that relations with Iran should be restored to move back on its normal track or even go beyond it.”

“We need cooperation and companionship to confront the US Empire. Egypt and Iran are two regional powers and thus their relations should be resumed and any effort to rock this boat means betraying the Egyptian nation,” Kharbawi underscored.

“What Mohammad Mursi said in his election campaign about resumption of ties with Iran is his desire and dream,” but some sides are trying to discourage him, Kharbawi said.

“However, Mursi intends to establish relations with Iran,” the politician reiterated.

Last month, Mursi underlined his enthusiasm for the further expansion of ties with Iran, and said relations between Tehran and Cairo will create a strategic balance in the region.

“The issue will create a strategic balance in the region,” Mursi told FNA in June, hours before the final results of the presidential election was announced.

Earlier this week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Mursi, in their first telephone conversation, conferred on the two Muslim countries’ ties and the upcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran.

President Ahmadinejad said Tehran welcomes close interactions with the Egyptian government and nation, and attaches no limitations to the expansion of ties and cooperation with Cairo.

Ahmadinejad expressed Iran’s preparedness to transfer capabilities, achievements and experiences in various scientific, technological, industrial and economic fields to the Egyptian people.

He also invited Egypt’s first democratically-elected president to participate in the NAM summit.
