Jabalia Municipality Issues Dire Warning Over Looming Waste Crisis

The Jabalia Al-Nazla Municipality issued a warning on Tuesday regarding the mounting waste accumulation in its area, as teams are currently unable to effectively collect and dispose of the refuse due to the deteriorating conditions in the Gaza Strip. This situation heightens concerns over a looming public health and environmental crisis.

The Jabalia Al-Nazla Municipality issued a warning on Tuesday about the increasing build-up of waste in its area, as municipal teams struggle to collect and dispose of it effectively due to the persistent crisis in the Gaza Strip. This situation has heightened concerns over a looming public health and environmental catastrophe.

In a press release, the municipality announced that waste collection and disposal operations are hindered because the primary landfill sites are situated in regions currently under the control of the Israeli forces.

The report highlighted that crews have been compelled to resort to temporary and arbitrary dumping sites. This development is exacerbated by the devastation of over 90% of the municipality’s vehicles and equipment, a consequence of ongoing Israeli airstrikes on its facilities and garages. Of particular note is the deliberate targeting that occurred on April 22, 2025.

The municipality has warned of an escalating waste crisis in Jabalia, which now risks triggering a significant health and environmental catastrophe. This threat is underscored by the severe undermining of Gaza’s already delicate healthcare infrastructure due to ongoing assaults and a blockade that obstructs the entry of critical medical supplies.

The local government has appealed to global and humanitarian entities for immediate intervention, urging them to exert pressure to halt the ongoing aggression. They are also seeking the facilitation of essential machinery and equipment access to prevent an impending disaster and alleviate the suffering of the residents in Jabalia and the wider Gaza Strip.
