Syria has called on the United Nations Security Council to issue a ‘clear condemnation’ of the recent Israeli airstrike that targeted a research center near Damascus.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the rotating presidency of the Council in regards with the airstrike, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported on Thursday.

According to the report, Damascus urged the Council to issue a “clear condemnation of the flagrant Israeli attack on the territories of a sovereign state and the Israeli violation of the UN Charter, the international law, the Disengagement of Forces Agreement in 1974 and the relevant UNSC resolutions.”

On January 30, the Syrian army said two people were killed and five others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a research center in Jamraya, near the capital. The Israeli regime declined to comment on the issue.

The foreign ministry further said the Israeli attack was carried out after foreign-backed militants failed to seize the targeted location on their own.

In case the Council refrains from fulfilling its responsibilities to deter dangerous Israeli attacks, it will be considered its failure to play the role it has been tasked by the UN Charter in maintaining peace and security, the letter added.

It further stressed Syria’s right to defend its territory and sovereignty, saying Damascus holds the Israeli regime and its protectors at the Security Council fully responsible for the aggression.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry also sent a similar letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

On Thursday, Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah strongly condemned the Israeli attack and said it was “barbaric aggression.”

Russia also said if the information on the Israeli attack was confirmed, “Then we are dealing with unprovoked strikes against targets located on the territory of a sovereign state, which brazenly infringes on the UN Charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motive used for its justification.”
