Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s former army chief, is set to be sworn in as the country’s new president after his victory in last month’s presidential election.

Sisi will take his oath of office later on Sunday at the Constitutional Court in the capital, Cairo, amid tight security.

Security forces have been deployed across the capital in anticipation of mass demonstrations by the supporters of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, and the Muslim Brotherhood movement as well as possible militant attacks.

Soldiers have been deployed to guard the Constitutional Court. Helicopters were used to drop Sisi’s posters for his supporters in the area.

A number of Arab royals and African leaders as well as acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas will later take part in a reception at the presidential palace.

On June 3, Sisi was officially declared president after Egypt’s electoral commission said that he had won 96.91 percent of the vote.

In an address after his victory, Sisi asked Egyptians to “work to return security to this nation.”

The election came nearly one year after Sisi led the ouster of Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president, in July 2013.

The Muslim Brotherhood movement and pro-democracy groups boycotted the election, a move that apparently led to a lower turnout than the election that brought Morsi to power in 2012.

The army’s crackdown on the supporters of Morsi has left over 1,400 people dead; thousands have been also jailed. Hundreds of Morsi supporters have been sentenced to death.

Sisi’s presidency places Egypt back in the hands of a top military official just three years after a popular uprising against Mubarak, an air force officer who ruled the North African country for nearly three decades.
