Dozens of people have been wounded in Egypt in clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi.

The clashes broke out in the city of Alexandria after Friday prayers.

Anti-Morsi protesters were marching through the streets when they encountered the president’s supporters in Alexandria’s Victor Emanuel Square.

The two sides threw stones at each other and torched piles of rubbish. Security forces eventually intervened to break up the clashes.

Egypt has witnessed continuing anti-government protests since Morsi took office last June. The opposition accuses the president of leading a dictatorial government.

The Egyptians launched the revolution against the pro-Israeli regime on January 25, 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak on February 11, 2011.
