Palestinian government in Gaza mourns Mandela

The Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip has expressed its condolences to the government and people of South Africa for the loss of its former president Nelson Mandela.

“We mourn today a great man and inspirational leader who was an icon against racism and discrimination practiced by Israeli occupation,” the government stated in a press release on Friday.

Its statement recalled remarks made by Mandela in support of the Palestinian people, in which he said, “We knew too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”

The statement urged the world’s free people to continue Mandela’s path until the liberation of Palestine from the Israeli occupation.
