Militants have attacked a number of tankers carrying fuel for US-led forces in Afghanistan’s western province of Farah, torching some of them.

Local officials say at least five tankers were destroyed during the attack on Monday. The convoy was moving towards a US-led base in Helmand Province.

The officials also said that three militants were killed and four others injured in the clashes between security forces and the assailants.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that six tankers were destroyed and sixteen security forces killed and wounded in the ambush.

The militants frequently attack trucks carrying supplies from Pakistan to the US-led forces in Afghanistan.

Over a decade of the costly US-led war in Afghanistan has failed to end militancy in the country.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the United States and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.
