Most Americans see Iraq War as mistake: Poll

Most Americans see Iraq War as mistake
The majority of Americans believe that it was a mistake to invade and occupy the Middle Eastern Arab state of Iraq, according to a recent public opinion poll.

The survey, which was conducted by Gallup Poll on March 7-10 – the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the conflict in 2003 – showed that 53 percent disapprove of the US incursion.

“Americans initially supported the war, with substantial majorities in 2003 saying the US decision to get involved in Iraq was not a mistake,” the poll stated, going on to say that “However, attitudes changed relatively quickly, and by the summer of 2004, a majority of Americans called the war a mistake.”

Meanwhile, 42 percent of the respondents had a positive view of the invasion.

This comes as the investigator with the UN Human Rights Council Ben Emmerson criticized US President Barack Obama’s administration for failing to prosecute officials of the Bush-era for cases of criminal acts.

Ex-US Secretary of State Colin Powell has come out and expressed deep regret over his remarks at the UN Security Council in support of waging the 2003 war against Iraq, in which he detailed the Bush administration’s fabricated report about the purported weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the Arab country.

In 2003, the US and Britain invaded Iraq in blatant violation of international law and under the pretext of finding WMDs. But no such weapons were ever discovered in Iraq.

More than one million Iraqis were killed as the result of the US-led invasion and subsequent occupation of the country, according to the California-based investigative organization Project Censored.
