Washington’s new sanctions against Iran show the untrustworthiness of the United States and are against its commitments under the Geneva interim nuclear deal, says a commentator.

Marzieh Javadi, a political commentator from Tehran, said in an interview with Press TV that the recent sanctions are “clearly a violation of the Joint Plan of Action between Iran and the P5+1.”

“This is clearly a violation of the spirit of the agreement and also violation of the terms of the agreement,” she said.

Javadi also stated that the “United States is showing itself to be more untrustworthy”, adding that the “Iranian public will be become more distrustful of the United States by seeing such moves.”

The commentator further noted that “the Iranians have shown their flexibility to the international community but the United States is showing itself incapable of policy change.”

Iran has condemned Washington’s imposition of new sanctions against the country, saying the move is in contravention of the Geneva interim nuclear deal between Tehran and the P5+1 group.

Javadi argued that unless the “ideational differences” between the lawmakers in Congress and US President Barack Obama are resolved, there would be “no prospect for reaching a comprehensive deal.”

On Tuesday, the US Treasury imposed new economic bans on nine individuals and entities, most of them for violating anti-Iran sanctions.

The sanctions come as Iran and the P5+1 – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany – are in talks to reach a final agreement aimed at resolving the standoff over Tehran’s civilian nuclear work.

Under the Geneva agreement sealed between the two sides last November, the six countries agreed to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Tehran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran.
