North Korea threatens to strike Great Satan US over Sony hack

North Korea has threatened to retaliate against the United States after it was accused of orchestrating a destructive cyberattack on Sony Pictures.

In a long blistering statement, Pyongyang warned of strikes against the White House, Pentagon and “the whole US mainland,” which it described as a “cesspool of terrorism.”

The statement did not specify what kind of response North Korea would take, but warned that its 1.2 million-member army stood ready to use all types of warfare against the United States.

“The army and people of the DPRK are fully ready to stand in confrontation with the US in all war spaces including cyber warfare space,” the statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency said.

US security officials believe Pyongyang launched the attack in order to disrupt the release of “The Interview,” a comedy that features the fictional killing of its leader Kim Jong-un.

Pyongyang also accused US President Barack Obama of “recklessly making the rumor” that it was behind the cyberattack.

The latest threat came hours after Obama said Washington might put North Korea back on the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The US is also consulting its allies for a coordinated response to the Sony attack.

The North Korean government insisted on Saturday that it was not behind the hacking and proposed a joint investigation with the US to prove it was not involved. The US, however, rejected the offer.
