Japan Ready for Nuclear Cooperation with Iran

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced Tokyo’s preparedness to share experience with Tehran in various areas of civilian nuclear technology.

During the meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday, Abe welcomed the recent nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany), and expressed the hope that the problems between the two sides would be resolved.

He also hoped that relations between Iran and Tokyo would further expand.

Zarif, for his part, stressed that Tehran attaches great importance to its ties with Tokyo, and expressed the hope that the two countries would develop cooperation, specially in the oil, gas and environmental fields.

Iranian and Japanese officials have held various meetings in economic, trade, political and cultural fields in recent years to explore new ways of expanding bilateral ties.

Iran is one of the main oil suppliers to Japan.

In a relevant development today, Zarif in a meeting with the members of Japan-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group underlined the need for Tehran-Tokyo cooperation, specially in area of the civilian nuclear technology.

“The two countries could cooperate in nuclear technology area, particularly in nuclear security and generation of electricity,” Zarif said during the meeting.

The Iranian foreign minister referred to Japan as friendly country of Iran, and said, “Tehran and Tokyo could cooperate in environment protection and green industries as well.”

The head of Iran-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, for his part, voiced readiness of the Japanese economic bodies to resume cooperation with Iran.
