Protests erupt across US as citizens rally against Trump’s assertion that the US will “own” the Gaza Strip
In Washington, D.C., American citizens have gathered in protest against a plan attributed to President Donald Trump, which allegedly seeks to establish prolonged control over the Gaza Strip.

Protesters filled the streets of the city on Wednesday, emphatically declaring, “The Gaza Strip is not for sale.”
During a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, Trump, accompanied by Netanyahu, announced that the United States would take charge of efforts to rebuild demolished structures, dispose of unexploded ordnance, and facilitate the relocation of Palestinians to new areas.
He reportedly claimed that the United States would assume control of the Gaza Strip, saying, “We will take responsibility and effectively manage it.”
“Consideration of U.S. Troop Deployment to Gaza”
Trump’s announcement follows the Israeli government’s inability to achieve its aim of relocating Gaza’s entire populace to neighboring Egypt. This objective has remained unmet despite the ongoing conflict lasting over 15 months, during which Israeli operations reportedly resulted in the deaths of more than 61,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children.
In a recent statement, Trump proposed the relocation of displaced Palestinians to “other countries with humanitarian interests,” although he did not provide extensive details on the practical implementation of this plan.
He indicated that deploying American troops to Gaza remains a possibility, asserting, “We will take that step if deemed necessary.”
The “New Riviera”
Trump has suggested that the conflict-stricken Gaza Strip, currently home to over two million Palestinians, has the potential to transform into “the Riviera” of the Middle East. This statement came as he unveiled his intentions to assume control over the territory.
Trump described Gaza as having the potential to become “The Riviera of the Middle East” as he reiterated his aspiration for the relocation of Palestinians from the area. He further indicated that the United States could play a pivotal role in the redevelopment of the territory, envisioning a transformation with significant grandeur.
“A Formula for Turmoil”
The proposal, which Trump referred to as a “long-term ownership position,” faced swift and intense criticism from Palestinian organizations.
The Gaza-based Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, has described the situation as a “blueprint for chaos and tension in the region,” asserting that the people of the Gaza Strip will resist these plans.
The group’s condemnation coincided with forecasts suggesting that the proposal might heighten regional tensions and trigger fresh waves of resistance throughout the Palestinian territories and beyond.
Several regional states, notably Saudi Arabia, have categorically opposed any initiatives to relocate Palestinians. These nations have underscored the Palestinians’ demand for the creation of an independent state.
Trump’s recent remarks have sparked backlash from activists and experts alike. Political analyst Omar Baddar sharply criticized the pronouncement, stating that it effectively calls for the dismantlement of Palestinian society and the displacement of its population.
U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has accused Trump of “explicitly advocating for ethnic cleansing.”
Experts in international law, alongside human rights organizations, have expressed serious concerns regarding the legality of Trump’s proposal. They warn that implementing forced displacement and establishing a foreign occupation in Gaza could potentially breach multiple international treaties and conventions.
Abed Ayoub, executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), has criticized the proposed plan, stating it undermines Palestinian rights and establishes a concerning precedent for unilateral territorial annexations.
Netanyahu lauded Trump, describing him as “the greatest friend Israel has ever had.” He also indicated that the proposed plan has the potential to “alter the course of history.”
The visit to the United States by an Israeli official sought by the International Criminal Court has sparked widespread condemnation from numerous regional and international organizations, as well as prominent figures and advocacy groups. The criticism centers on allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
In a separate statement, Trump expressed skepticism regarding the durability of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which is anticipated to bring an end to ongoing hostilities.
“[Israeli] strikes might commence as soon as tomorrow, given that there are few targets remaining,” he stated, referencing ongoing breaches of the agreement by Tel Aviv.
He further claimed that the “American-led initiative” would result in the “transformation” of the conflict-ridden Palestinian region.
Critics have suggested that Trump’s proposal may be designed to shift focus away from the persistent controversies enveloping his administration. Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy labeled the proposal as a “reckless distraction from pressing domestic issues.”
