Senators urge independent spying review

A bipartisan group of US senators have called for an independent review of the US National Security Agency’s spying operations.

In a letter to the inspector general of the US intelligence community, US senators have demanded “comprehensive and independent reviews” of the spying activities conducted by the NSA.
The letter which has been sent to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said: “Recent disclosures about classified government surveillance activities have generated significant public discussion about the breadth of these programs, many of which are conducted pursuant to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), and the need for appropriate oversight and checks and balances.”
Documents disclosed by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden has shed some light on the scope and scale of US spying programs which showed how US spy agencies collected data on American’s phone records and the Internet communications of all people around the world and even conducted cyber-attacks and hacked into the computer systems of other countries’ diplomatic missions.
Senators’ call for an independent review of the NSA’s spying programs comes a few days after it was reported that a so-called independent panel tasked with reviewing the spy agency’s activities is closely working with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI).
