MP Dismisses Alleged Suspension of Iran’s 20% Uranium Enrichment as “Untrue”

A member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission stressed on Sunday that the recent allegation about a halt in Iran’s 20 percent uranium enrichment activities is not true.

“This claim is unreal because the 20 percent enriched uranium is needed for Tehran’s (Research) Reactor and its medical purposes,” Kazzem Jalali said on Sunday.

He stressed that Iran considers uranium enrichment as its inalienable right, and added, “In line with defending our nuclear rights, we believe that uranium enrichment is our inalienable right.”

Some media sources alleged on Saturday that Iran has halted its 20 percent uranium enrichment activities.

A few hours later, informed sources told FNA that the claim was not true.

“20 percent uranium enrichment activities continue as before and no change has happened,” an informed source told FNA Saturday night.

Iranian officials have repeatedly reiterated that the country’s right to enrich uranium to the level of 20% is Tehran’s redline and the world powers should recognize this right in negotiations.

The world powers had earlier called for a halt in Iran’s 20% uranium enrichment but Iranian officials said that Tehran will continue the enrichment activity that is needed for the production of isotopes for the treatment of about 1 million cancer patients in Iran.
