1 US service member killed in Afghanistan

One US service member has been killed by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, bringing the number of US citizens killed in October to 30 so far.

A statement by the US military said the blast occurred Saturday, but it did not give details.

This has been the deadliest year for international and US forces in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion. Fighting in the war-torn country has left more than 420 NATO troops dead this year.

The number of US fatalities spiked around the presidential vote in August to 51.

The mounting NATO death toll has plummeted public support for the Afghan war in Europe and the US.
