Two Syrians have been killed and several others injured in a mortar attack by the foreign-backed militants on a residential area in the capital, Damascus.

On Sunday afternoon, three mortar shells fired by militants slammed into the Ihda Ashariya residential area of the al-Zablatani neighborhood, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported.

Three children, aged between four and nine, were also among the injured.

The attack also caused damage to a number of houses and buildings in the area.

Over the past few months, the Syrian capital has come under mortar attacks by the militant groups holed up on the outskirts of the city.

Syrian troops continue operations against the armed groups in the Damascus suburbs to drive the militants out.

The foreign-sponsored militancy in Syria has taken its toll on the lives of many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, since the outbreak of turmoil more than two years ago.

On Sunday, the Syrian army launched a major operation to clear the northwestern city of Aleppo of the militants in the country. The operation is code-named North Storm.

The Syrian forces closed the major outlets of the city, which is located some 310 kilometers (192 miles) north of the capital.

On June 5, the Syrian state TV said the western town of Qusayr, which lies near the border with Lebanon, was under full control of the Syrian army following three weeks of fighting with militants. Syrian troops were backed by forces from the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah during the Qusayr operation.

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has said that the army enjoys popular support in the fight against terrorism.
