At least one person has been killed and dozens more injured after two passenger trains collided into one another in South Korea, authorities say.

The incident happened in the city of Taebaek in Gangwon province on Tuesday, a resort area about 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Seoul.

More than 70 people had been injured after a commuter train collided with a tourist train, a police official said.

The Taebaek Fire Station captured photos and a video showing rescue personnel attending to passengers from the crashed trains.

The incident marks the latest in a series of transportation accidents in South Korea over recent years.

In April, a 6,825-ton ferry abruptly listed and then sank while on its way to the resort island of Jeju, killing more than 300 people, most of them children.

More than 170 people were injured in the capital city Seoul when two subway trains collided on May 2.

South Korea faces criticism that regulatory controls and safety standards have not kept pace with its vibrant and technically advanced democracy – the fourth largest in Asia.
