US, allies ‘arming al-Qaeda’ in Syria

The United States and its allies are supplying weapons to the terrorists – including al-Qaeda forces – operating inside Syria, says an analyst, Press TV reports.

“Western weapons are being funneled to terrorists in Syria, and not just any terrorist, but the supposed arch-terrorist enemy – al-Qaeda,” wrote Finian Cunningham in an article on Press TV on Tuesday.

However, Cunningham wrote, the West cannot afford to continue arming the terrorists overtly.

“Something must be done to cover up the abominable truth,” he wrote.

Therefore, the countries supporting the terrorists inside Syria are preparing a media campaign to present a new dichotomy of “bad al-Qaeda/good al-Qaeda” and manipulate public opinion by announcing that they are supporting the “good al-Qaeda” in crisis-hit Syria.

“The ‘initiative’ is Washington-inspired in a bid to give itself a license to further weaponize its al-Qaeda foot soldiers in Syria,” Cunningham said.

“True to its origins as a Western intelligence asset, al-Qaeda is helping to create an illusion in Syria that will enable US weapons supply to the militants in that country to continue.”

“Even though the stark reality is that Washington and its allies are – and always have been – on the side of out-and-out terrorists of varying stripes. Indeed, Washington and its allies are the terrorists-in-chief,” Cunningham concluded.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011.

Reports indicate that a large number of the terrorists inside Syria are foreign nationals.

Syrian army forces are currently involved in battling the militants in several fronts in the country.

Earlier, the foreign-sponsored terror in Syria spilled over to neighboring Iraq when the al-Qaeda-linked forces of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) infiltrated the western Iraqi province of Anbar.

Iraqi security forces have launched a military operation to drive the ISIL terrorists out.
