In a letter to the US daily The Washington Post on Friday, the head of the press office for Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York, Alireza Miryousefi pointed to Article 2 of the UN Charter that prohibits all member states “from the threat or use of force against” any other member states.
Miryousefi wrote “In the current debates regarding the authorization of military intervention against Syria, there is understandably great skepticism of both the legitimacy and legality of such a disastrous course of action.”
Miryousefi said the US ignored a warning from Tehran, communicated through a Swiss channel by Iran’s Foreign Ministry nine months ago, that chemical weapons have been smuggled to Syrian militants.
The Iranian official also pointed out that a potential military intervention in Syria would be harmful to multilateral nuclear talks with Iran as it would undermine a win-win solution sought by Tehran.
