60 bodies recovered, 300 arrested in Nigeria

In Nigeria, more bodies have been recovered from last week’s inter-religious bloodshed, as more than 300 suspects have been arrested.

Around 60 more bodies have been retrieved from two villages near Jos, the capital of Nigeria’s Plateau State, reports said late Monday.

More than 550 people have been found dead so far, according to medical and aid workers, as well as the Human Rights Watch (HRW).

The HRW stated that most of the victims were Muslims.

Police said more than 300 people suspected of being involved in the four-day violence in Jos, which erupted on January 17 in central Nigeria, have been arrested.

Almost half of them have been taken from the central Plateau state to the capital, Abuja, for questioning.

Troops have been ordered to remain on their posts to prevent the army from being dragged into the conflict. The Chief of Defense Staff Paul Dike has warned members of the armed forces to steer clear of politics.
