US, Israel want divided Muslim states

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the recent referendum on secession of Sudan was an Israeli-US plan, cautioning against similar plots aimed at disintegrating certain Muslim countries.

“All capacities of the Muslim world, including the Organization of the Islamic Conference, should be utilized to fight against this imposed trend,” Fars news agency quoted Head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Alaeddin Boroujerdi as saying on Tuesday.

He stressed the importance of strengthening unity among Muslims across the world and expressed his opposition to any kind of secession of Muslim countries.

The Iranian lawmaker highlighted the significance of unity and territorial integrity of Muslim countries.

Southern Sudanese people went to polls earlier this month to vote on secession from the north.

The vote caps a 2005 peace agreement, brokered by the African Union and the United Nations, which ended decades of civil war between Sudan’s northern and southern parts.

Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has said the divisions between the two regions are the legacy of the former colonial power, Britain.

Bashir has said he will accept the result of the referendum but also warned that south Sudan would face instability in the wake of a possible secession.
