US rights violations go unreported

A Tehran City Council official has presented an in-depth report on the human rights situation in the United States, denouncing the double standards adopted on rights issues there.
“In the annual reports published by the US State Department on the human rights situation in the world, most countries have been accused of violating human rights, but no mention has been made of the numerous cases of human rights violations in the US,” chairman of the Cultural and Social Commission of the Tehran City Council Morteza Talaei said Tuesday.
He said one of the tactics repeatedly used by Washington over the past years has been to distort and magnify the status of rights violation in Iran.
Talaei added that the White House has, in recent years, resorted to propaganda campaigns and psychological warfare to tarnish Iran’s reputation.
Washington has accused Iran of interfering with the people’s freedoms and violating international norms in a bid to paint a bleak picture of the rights situation in the country, ISNA quoted him as saying.
Talaei said the US covers up its rights violations through its media dominance and refusing to answer to the international community.
He touched upon the shocking violence and crime rate in the US and underlined that around 1,410,000 cases of crime and violence were officially registered in the country in 2007.
