US Secretary of State John Kerry has admitted that the Obama administration’s policy on Syria is failing, according to two US senators.

In a closed-door meeting with 15 US Congressmen, Kerry said that he no longer believeds the administration’s approach to the Syrian crisis is working, The Daily Beast reported Sunday, citing two of the senators who were in the private session.

The report comes a few days after peace talks, held in Geneva between militant groups and the Syrian government, failed to achieve its objectives.

The White House is now resuming deliveries of arms to the militant groups, who have been fighting people local to the Syrian government over the past three years. The two senators have confirmed that Kerry now wants to arm Syria’s militants, according to the report.

“We are at a point now where we are going to have to change our strategy,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, who attended Kerry’s briefing with lawmakers on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “He [Kerry] openly talked about supporting arming the rebels. He openly talked about forming a coalition against al-Qaeda because it’s a direct threat.”

The US says militants in Syria have split into “moderate rebel” groups and al-Qaeda insurgent groups. The latter, Washington says, fights both the Syrian government forces and the first militant groups.

Shortly after Kerry’s meeting ended, Sens. Graham and John McCain described the session to The Daily Beast, The Washington Post, and Bloomberg View.

The senators said they agreed with Kerry that the time had come for Washington “to drastically alter” its approach to the Syrian conflict.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. Reports say more than 130,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by Western-backed militants who wants the ouster of President Assad.

The international conference, dubbed as ‘Geneva II’ on Syria was aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis but it ended Friday with no concrete results.

The so-called Syrian National Council (SNC) and its Western supporters insist that Assad must step down and a transitional government be formed in the Arab country. But, Damascus rejects their demand, arguing the SNC does not represent the Syrian people.
