Hundreds of people have held a demonstration in Jordan’s capital Amman against a government deal with the Tel Aviv regime to import natural gas from Israel.

The demonstration was held on the so-called day of popular anger in the face of the shame deal in front of Grand al-Husseini Mosque after Friday prayers.

The protesters said Amman had made a deal to import “the gas of the enemy.”

They were carrying banners that read, “They kill our children and we buy gas from them!” and “No to the shame deal.”

Some of the protesters wore red t-shirts with the printed slogan, “The enemy’s gas is occupation.”

Amman has witnessed similar protests since the announcement of the agreement late in September, with the protesters calling for immediate abolition of the 10-billion-dollar deal, which they say runs contrary to Jordan’s national interests.

On September 26, Jordan’s National Electric Power Company signed the deal with US-based Noble Energy and Israeli partners for the import of approximately 1.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per day over a 15-year term. Production is expected to begin around 2019 or 2020.

The American firm will tap the Leviathan natural gas field in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of the Israeli-occupied territories.

Jordan’s National Electric Power Company claims that the deal will save the country $600 million on a yearly basis.

Former Jordanian Energy Minister Muhammad Batayneh has questioned the terms of the agreement, saying Israel would be the main beneficiary.
