Police arrest several ant-corporatism protesters in New York

US police have arrested several anti-corporatism protesters during a demonstration in front of the New York Stock Exchange, Press TV reports.

The arrests were made on Saturday after the Occupy protesters gathered on the steps of Federal Hall to counter the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange.

Anti-capitalist activists accused the New York Police Department of imposing a media blackout on the protest rally and the police confrontation with the protesters.

The Saturday demonstration was part of weekly rallies in the city dubbed ‘Spring Training’. Organizers said the rallies are in preparation for massive May Day demonstrations.

Meanwhile, anti-corporatism protesters have begun spending nights on the sidewalks of the Wall Street, near the New York Stock Exchange and in front of banks.

The initiative came after the protesters were expelled from their original encampment in the city’s Zuccotti Park late last year.

The US saw the emergence of a popular movement after a group of people on September 17, 2011 rallied in New York’s financial district under the motto of ‘Occupy Wall Street,’ protesting corruption, poverty as well as social inequality in the country.

The protesters have been using the slogan, “We are the 99 percent!” to distinguish themselves from the one percent of Americans who are in possession of the greatest portion of the nation’s wealth.
